Box Score (PDF)NEWARK, Del. – In an up-and-down offensive affair, Delaware scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to edge the La Salle baseball team, 14-13, on Wednesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium. Five Explorers registered multi-hit days, led by three-hit showings from
George Smith Jr (3-5, RBI, R),
Nick Tierno (3-5, 2 RBI, 2 R), and
Felipe Rivera (3-5, RBI, 3 R).
The clubs started the game with a fury, combining for 13 runs in the first three innings as Delaware led 7-6.
Joey Ravert (1-3, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB) and Tierno each bopped homers for the Explorers, who led 10-7 after seven innings.
La Salle's bullpen relinquished the lead in the eighth, coughing up four runs to the Blue Hens who retook the lead 11-10.
Tom Fazzini, who didn't retire a single batter, was charged with three earned in the frame.
That set the stage for a wild ninth inning that witnessed the Explorers snatch back the lead. With two outs and the bases loaded,
Kevin Baron (2-6, 5 RBI, R) belted a bases-clearing double to right center field to put the Blue & Gold up 13-11.
But Delaware (15-15) was not to be denied on this day, pushing across three runs in the bottom of the ninth off
Adam Cherry (L, 0-2) to walk off the Explorers. Norm Donkin (1-0) was credited with the win.
Andrew Craig (2.2 IP, 0 ER) and
Mike McLeod (2.0 IP, 0 ER) recorded 14 outs on the afternoon, holding the fort during their middle relief stints.
Jorge Jimenez made his third start of the year but struggled with wildness and was yanked after two-thirds of an inning.
The Explorers (9-20) will host George Washington on Friday at 3:00 p.m. in the first of a three-game Atlantic 10 weekend set.
