Nick Ross, and
Zach Sullivan each recorded PRs in their respective events and parlayed their success into a berth in the NCAA Preliminary Championships with strong showings on Monday afternoon at the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet. The quartet will compete in Jacksonville, Fla. beginning on May 29 for a chance to qualify for the NCAA Final Round Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Sanders started the party with a 1:48.69 in the 800 meter run, besting his PR by nearly two seconds while placing first. The freshman left the field in his wake en route to the 21
st fastest time in the NCAA East Region this spring. He missed eclipsing La Salle's 800m outdoor record by just 26-hundredths of a second (Mark Cianfrani, 1:48.43 – 1998).
Four more Explorers recorded personal bests in the 1500 meter run, paced by a 3:43.21 by Santana, who finished second. Santana's mark is good for 15
th in the region and narrowly missed the school record set in 1998 by Brian Gallagher (3:42.82). Ross (3:44.24) and Sullivan (3:46.00) came in fifth and sixth, respectively while
Vince Perozze posted an IC4A qualifying time of 3:48.18.
Chris Trimble and
Kevin Grosso competed in the 800 meter run, coming in 28
th and 42
nd, respectively. Trimble posted a 1:54.03 while Grosso crossed at 1:56.16.
Joshua Byrd ran a PR in the 200 meter run, crossing the line at 22.92. The mark was good for seventh in his heat and 15
th overall.
John Pujols enjoyed a successful debut in the 3000 meter steeplechase, registering a 9:39.72 while coming in eighth.
The Explorers will run again this weekend at the IC4A Championships.
