PHILADELPHIA – Alfredo Santana has been named to the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-District Track & Field/Cross Country team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Capital One and CoSIDA recognize the nation's top student-athletes annually for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Santana, a first-team District II selection, was one of two Atlantic 10 male runners to earn the distinction. He graduated in May with a 3.32 GPA as a Psychology major.
The Nueva Esperanza product qualified for the NCAA Final Round Championships in the 1500 meter run with a third place effort at the preliminary championships on Saturday evening. He ran a 3:45.65, the second-fastest time of his career, to earn a trip to Eugene, Oregon. He is the first Explorer to qualify since Sean Quigley qualified for the 5k and 10k in 2008.
He became just the second La Salle runner in history to qualify for the 1500m championships (Brian Gallagher – 1998).Santana was named Most Outstanding Performer at the A-10 Indoor Championships after winning the 3k (8:23.31) and 5k (14:47.54). He followed up with a pair of silver medals in the outdoor conference championships in the 5k (14:51.00) and 10k (30:01.87). He also ran the anchor leg of the school record-breaking 4xMile relay team at the Penn Relays (16:33.50).
Santana is one of two A-10 runners in history to earn Most Outstanding Performer honors in cross country (2011), indoor (2013, 2014), and outdoor (2013).
He has twice been named A-10 Academic All-Conference and was selected as a USTFCCCA All-Academic choice a year ago.
