Yevgen Sakhniuk (Kiev, Ukraine) a member of the Ukrainian Under 20 National Team, has signed a financial aid agreement to attend La Salle University and play men's basketball, head coach
Dr. John Giannini announced today. Sakhniuk has also played for the Ukrainian U-16 and U-18 teams.
"I am very excited about Yevgen because he is a good person, a hard worker and a good player," Giannini said. "He has a great combination of size, toughness, skill and athleticism. With Jerrell and Steve entering their senior years, Yevgen's addition is critical to our future. I believe he will be a very good player who will help us achieve our goal of returning to the NCAA Tournament."
Sakhniuk (6'7, 225 lbs.) averaged 16 ppg. and 11 rpg. in February against American high school teams while playing for his club squad, Get Better Academy. In the 2013 European U-18 Championship, Sakhniuk averaged 10.9 ppg. and 8.9 rpg., both team-highs.
The Kiev, Ukraine native also played in the 2013 FIBA Europe All-Star Game and participated in the dunk contest.
Last week, Sakhniuk scored 23 points and had nine rebounds as the Ukrainian U-20 Team defeated Lithuania, 77-73.
