Field Hockey Wins Third Straight; 2-1 Over Davidson In A-10 Opener

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle field hockey squad won its third straight and snagged its first Atlantic 10 win of the season, dropping Davidson 2-1 in the league opener for both squads.

The Explorers improve to 3-3 (1-0 Atlantic 10), while the Wildcats fall to 1-5 (0-1 Atlantic 10).

Sophomore Devin Muracco had a hand in both goals, scoring the game winner in the 18th minute and assisting on Kendall Kreider's insurance goal in the 47th minute. Colleen Kempf also recorded an assist, helping on Muracco's game winner.

"Overall we are really excited about our first A-10 win," Muracco said. "We have been working hard every day for this and it has definitely set the playing field for the upcoming games. As a team, we are pumped and ready to prepare for our next game against Lock Haven."

The first half was all Explorers, with the home squad outshooting the visitors 11-4. The Explorers had a great shot to get on the board in the fourth minute,a s four different players got a shot off in a 16-second span thanks to a scramble in front of the cage; however, Davidson keeper Emily Leytham was on top of all four of those to keep the game scoreless.

Muracco broke through with her goal in the 18th minute. Jess Hoffman rocketed a shot toward the goal that was saved by Leytham, but Kempf picked up the rebound and passed over to Muracco. Muracco then punched home the score with a chip shot past Leytham's right side to put the Explorers up 1-0.

The Davidson defense settled in after that, limiting the Explorers to just one more shot in the first half. The Explorers, however, came out firing after the halftime break as Kreider scored her second goal of the season just 1:29 into the second half. Muracco picked up the ball about 10 yards out and passed to Kreider, who chipped the ball into the cage near the right post.

The Wildcats didn't go quietly, as they ramped up their offense in the final 10 minutes. They got five shots off in the final 10, including Katherine English's goal with just 1:32 remaining in the game to break up the shutout bid. Hannah Fisher took a penalty corner and found English, who took a hard shot from the top of the circle.

La Salle keeper Rachel Hartman picked up the win, needing five saves to do so. Leytham took the loss for Davidson, while making 11 saves.

The Explorers outshot the Wildcats 17-13 for the game, and the two squads were an even 9-9 in penalty corners.

La Salle returns to action next Friday (9/26) when the Explorers continue the Atlantic 10 schedule at Lock Haven at 3 p.m.
