TOWSON, Md. - The La Salle field hockey squad earned its first shutout win of the season, using one goal in each half and stifling defense to top Towson 2-0 on Sunday at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
Devin Muracco scored the winning goal for the Explorers (4-4) in the 29th minute, and
Colleen Kempf added her second goal of the weekend in the 68th minute.
Rachel Hartman also picked up her first career shutout in goal, needing just two early saves to accomplish that.
The Explorers and Tigers (2-6) played fairly even ball early on, each taking three shots in the first 10 minutes. Hartman came up with back-to-back saves within 15 seconds of each other in the 10th minute of play.
The Explorers then gained control of the game, outshooting Towson 7-1 through the remainder of the half. Muracco broke through with her goal at the 28:24 mark, taking a pass from
Sophie Lozowski and rocketing a hard shot from the top of the circle into the cage.
La Salle also dominated after the  half, outshooting Towson 9-2 in the second frame. The Explorers added an insurance goal when Kempf fought through traffic in front of the cage to drain a goal at the 67:31 mark.
The two squads were even in penalty corner opportunities with five apiece. Towson's Megan Boyle took the loss in goal, making nine stops on the day.
The Explorers return home next weekend for a pair of Atlantic 10 contests. They host VCU on Friday (10/3) at 3:30 pm and Richmond on Sunday (10/5) at noon.
