Women's Basketball Drops 67-48 Game to #24 George Washington

PHILADELPHIA – A 19-8 George Washington run in the first half put the 24th-ranked Colonials up by double digits and they never relinquished that lead in a 67-48 decision over La Salle at Tom Gola Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Explorers (10-10, 1-6 Atlantic 10) got within 41-31 with 15:39 to go, but an 8-0 run ended the Explorers' rally.

Micahya Owens led the Explorers with 12 points and a career-high five steals, and Alicia Cropper chipped in 11 points.

Jonquel Jones led the Colonials (18-2, 7-0 Atlantic 10) with 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. The Explorers limited her to just 3-for-16 from the floor but she went 6-for-6 at the free throw line to get to double digit points. Kelli Prange added 11 points for GW.

The Explorers did a terrific job of pressuring GW's shooters, limiting the high-scoring squad to just 27.5 percent from the floor. However, the Colonials had plenty of opportunity by forcing the Explorers into an uncharacteristic 24 turnovers and turning those into 80 attempted shots.

The Colonials also showed what they do best - rebounding. They outrebounded the Explorers 63-38, including 29 offensive boards which they turned into 25 second-chance points.

With the score tied 4-4 early, the Colonials went on a 19-8 run to take control of the game. After a 35-20 halftime score, the Explorers caught fire and got back within 10 at 41-31 with 15:39 on the clock, but that was the closest they would get the rest of the way. The Colonials responded with an 8-0 spurt and never let the Explorers back in after that.

The Explorers went 30.8 percent from the floor (16-52) and 4-for-13 from long range. They hit 12 of 19 at the free throw line.

The squad also rejected eight shots, with Amy Griffin picking up four blocks and Lisa Mintzer adding three. Mintzer entered the game ranked third in the conference in blocked shots against A-10 foes, and will likely move up when the latest statistics are released by the A-10.

The Explorers will enjoy a short break with the bye week, and return to action at VCU next Saturday (1/31) at 7pm at the Siegel Center.
