WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The La Salle women's basketball team handled the Norfolk State Spartans 67-59 on Tuesday afternoon in the opening game of the Hawk Holiday Classic at Monmouth University.
The Explorers scored 10 straight points late in the 4th quarter to take control of the game after Norfolk State's Yazmen Hannah hit a layup to tie the game at 57-57 with 4:10 left in regulation.
Adreana Miller sparked the run with a pair of free throws with 3:48 left in the final quarter.
Micahya Owens, who had four points in the 10-0 run, led all scorers with 20 points in 26 minutes off the bench while adding five rebounds and four assists. The junior was 7-for-12 from the floor, including a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range.
Ebony Wells also brought scoring off the bench for the Explorers, chipping in 14 points in 21 minutes of action. Owens and Wells combined for 34 points while Norfolk State's reserves contributed only 10 points on the afternoon.
Sophomore
Amy Griffin added 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists while
Jasmine Alston had six points, a game-high 10 rebounds and five assists. Miller finished with five points and eight rebounds.
With 20 points today, Owens needs just eight points to become the 24th Explorer to score 1,000 career points.
The Explorers will play Monmouth on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
