Former Explorer Standout Signs with Philadelphia Union

PHILADELPHIA – Former La Salle men's soccer standout John McCarthy has signed a contract with the Philadelphia Union, the team announced Monday.
 
"It's a dream come true to sign with my hometown team," McCarthy said in the team's official release. "I'm thrilled with the opportunity and am looking forward at having a chance to contribute to such a great organization."
 
The Cinnaminson, N.J. native earned Rookie of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year in the USL Pro last season as a Rochester Rhino. McCarthy led the league in goals-against average (.72) and shutouts (10).
 
"This is a tremendous opportunity," said La Salle head coach Pat Farrell. "John is somebody who has set a goal to be a professional, and he works every day to hone his craft as a goalkeeper."
 
McCarthy earned three Atlantic 10 All-Conference nods and three NSCAA All-Mid Atlantic Region selections during his time with the Explorers (2010-13).The Northeast Catholic product is also La Salle's all-time leader in saves (468) and shutouts (28).
 
The Union begin their season on March 7 against the Colorado Rapids.
