Second Half Comeback Falls Short In 67-55 Loss To St. Joe's

PHILADELPHIA - A late 14-2 run fell short as the La Salle women's basketball squad fell 67-55 to Saint Joseph's in the regular season finale at Tom Gola Arena on Sunday afternoon.

The program's four seniors - Siobhan Beslow, Alicia Cropper, Indigo Dickens and Khristin Lee - were honored in the annual Senior Day ceremony prior to tipoff.

Lee led a balanced offensive effort with 11 points. The senior also grabbed seven rebounds and two steals, and dished out two assists in her final game at Gola Arena. Jasmine Alston chipped in nine points and Amy Griffin added eight. A trio of Explorers scored seven points each, including Beslow, Cropper and Micahya Owens. Beslow added a team-high eight rebounds.

SJU's Ciara Andrews led all scorers with 21 points and Ashley Robinson added 20.

Neither the Explorers (14-15, 5-11 Atlantic 10) nor the Hawks (12-16, 8-8 Atlantic 10) could get much offensive rhythm going as the squads played to a 24-24 halftime tie. The Hawks, however, kicked it up after the break. With the Explorers up 31-30 just under two minutes into the half, the Hawks ran on an 21-1 run over the next eight-plus minutes to open a 51-32 lead.

The Explorers answered with a 14-2 run to get within seven with 5:11 on the clock, but four Hawk free throws put the visitors back up 11 to stop the Explorers' rally. The Explorers answered with the next five points to get within 57-51 with 2:40 to go, but a Robinson layup and two Natasha Cloud free throws once again gave the Hawks a double-digit lead.

That was the closest the Explorers got down the stretch as the Hawks went 6-for-8 at the free throw line to close out the game.

The Explorers shot 35.4 percent for the game and 28.6 percent (2-7) from long range. The Hawks finished with a 45.8 percent clip thanks to going 62.5 percent in the second half. They hit just 1-of-5 three-pointers. The Hawks also owned the boards, 40-33. The Explorers did, however, force SJU into an uncharacteristic 20 turnovers. The Hawks came in averaging just 11.3 per game in league play.

The Explorers await word on the seeding and bracket of the Atlantic 10 Championship. The tournament starts on Wednesday at the Richmond Coliseum.
