PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle baseball team lost the opening game of the Big 5 Baseball Bash 7-0 to the Northeastern Huskies on Friday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field.
The Huskies scored six runs in the 5
th and another in the 8
th as NU starter Nick Berger (W, 2-2) tossed seven shutout innings. The righty allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out seven.
La Salle starter
Jordan Meyer (L, 1-1) didn't allow a hit until Nolan Lang singled to right with one out in the 5
th. After recording the second out in the inning, three straight hitters reached against Meyer before the junior was lifted in favor of
Jared Mattera with the bases loaded and La Salle trailing 1-0.
Northeastern's Michael Foster singled in two runs before Rob Fonseca pulled a three-run homer over the left field wall to put the Huskies in front 6-0. Meyer was charged with four earned runs over 4.2 innings while Mattera allowed three runs over 3.1 innings.
Josh Savakinus spoiled Berger's no-hit bid with a double to right center with one out in the 4
th. Savakinus finished 2-for-4 on the afternoon.
