BALTIMORE- The La Salle softball team dropped a 7-4 decision to Sacred Heart as part of the UMBC Spring Classic on Sunday afternoon.
The Pioneers jumped on top thanks to a six run third inning. Sacred Heart used four hits and three walks in the frame to put up six runs. The inning put the Pioneers up 6-0, a lead from which they wouldn't look back.
The Explorers would tighten the gap in the top of the fourth as they answered back with two runs of their own. Sophomore
Christina Bascara started off the inning with a one-out double down the right field line. The next batter, senior
Alicia Aughton would bring her home thanks to a two run home run to left field making the score 6-2.
Freshman
McKenzie Peace was able to sit the Pioneers down in order in the home half of the fourth inning thanks to two ground outs as well as a strikeout.
La Salle father narrowed Sacred Heart's lead in the top of the fifth as they added two more runs and made it a 6-4 game. Junior
Kendra Heyer started off the inning with a double through the right side. Sophomore
Marisa Kinneer was hit by a pitch which put runners at first and second with no one out. Bascara was able to load the bases with one out thanks to an infield single. Sophomore
Suzanne Swanicke walked which brought in Heyer and kept the bases loaded with only one out. The Explorers brought in another run with a bases loaded walk as
Erica Reis used a two-out walk to bring in the second run of the inning.
Sacred Heart added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning thanks to two hits and an error to make it a 7-4 game. Despite sophomore
Mackenzie Obert leading off the seventh inning with a single, the Explorers were unable to complete the comeback.
Junior
Mary Cate Scott threw two innings allowing no earned runs. Peace threw 1.2 innings in relief notching three strikeouts on the day.
The Explorers had five walks and five hits on the day but left seven would be runs stranded on base throughout the game.
La Salle returns to action next weekend as they play their first home series of the year against George Washington to open up their conference schedule. The series is slated to start on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
