WASHINGTON, D.C.- The La Salle softball team swept George Washington 10-1, 3-1 in a double header to open up their conference schedule on Sunday.
Sophomore
Michelle Hagarty picked up four RBIs on the day and scored three runs to help fuel the Explorers offense. Senior
Alicia Aughton threw a complete game in the first half of the double header with freshman
McKenzie Peace getting the start in win in the second game of the day.
Game one of the day saw the Explorers jump out to an 8-0 lead in the first three innings and they didn't look back from there. Sophomore
Suzanne Swanicke knocked in the first run of the day with a single to center field with the bases loaded. Freshman
Taylor Rohrbaugh followed that with a single of her own which brought in two additional runs to give La Salle a 3-0 lead after one.
La Salle added five runs to that in the third to jump out to an 8-0 lead. Freshman
Valerie Pineiro doubled with the bases loaded to drive in two runs. Hagarty hit a bases clearing double later in the inning to drive in three runs of her own and give the Explorers some room to work with.
The Colonials answered back with a run in the top of the fourth but La Salle scored two of their own in the bottom of the inning off of bases loaded walks to finish off George Washington.
Christina Bascara had two hits and scored three runs in the first game and
Alicia Aughton scored two runs of her own in the first half of the doubleheader. Aughton threw a complete game allowing only three hits in five innings while striking out three to improve to 1-2 on the year.
Game two was more of a pitcher's duel, with the Explorers pulling out a 3-1 win. La Salle got on the board in the bottom of the first thanks to a leadoff homerun from
Michelle Hagarty.
La Salle added two more runs in the third to stretch their lead to 3-0. Sophomore
Mackenzie Obert doubled to left field which brought home Hagarty who had reached on a walk. Bascara brought home Obert with a RBI single to center field.
George Washington got one run back in the top of the fifth but that was it as junior
Mary Cate Scott was able to hold on to the lead to ensure the Explorers win. Peace started the game and threw 4.0 innings with only a single hit and three strikeouts while Scott came on and threw the final 3.0 innings of the game.
The games were played at George Washington's Softball Field due to field conditions in Philadelphia following the Friday snowstorm. La Salle was still considered the home team for both games.
La Salle returns to action on Wednesday as they host crosstown rivals Penn in a double header.
