Three Home Runs Fuels Softball to 7-6 WIn

PHILADELPHIA- La Salle recorded three home runs and a season high nine hits in route to a 7-6 victory over Penn on Wednesday afternoon.

It proved to be a back-and-forth affair with the Explorers jumping out to an early lead before ultimately having to come from behind for a 7-6 win.

Freshmen Valerie Pineiro and Taylor Rohrbaugh each recorded a pair of hits in the win with Pineiro hitting two home runs including what proved to be the game winner in the top of the seventh inning.

La Salle jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to a three run home run from sophomore Suzanne Swanicke. The sophomore brought home Linnette Siedler and Rohrbaugh both of whom had reached on walks.

The Quakers answered back with four straight runs to take a 4-3 lead into the fourth inning. La Salle was able to tie things up thanks to a leadoff home run from Pineiro.

Penn used a leadoff triple in the bottom half of the inning to help them regain the lead at 5-4 heading into the fifth inning. After a scoreless fifth inning for both teams La Salle was able to regain the lead by scoring two runs in the top of the inning.

Sophomore Mackenzie Obert and freshman Angelina Refice started off the innings with back to back singles and Tori Gollie reached on an error to pack the bases with no outs. After Michelle Hagarty was able to walk in a run, senior Kristin Travers hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Refice. The pair of runs gave La Salle a 6-5 lead heading into the seventh.

La Salle was able to add on an insurance run in the seventh and it later paid dividends. Val Pineiro hit her second leadoff home run of the game in the seventh inning to stretch the lead to 7-5 for the Explorers. Penn was able to get one back but their comeback effort fell short as Mary Cate Scott recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the game and leave the tying run stranded on third base.

The Explorers travel to Fordham to face the Rams in a three game series beginning with a doubleheader at noon on Saturday.
