Explorers Fall to No. 25 Kansas, 8-1

DELAND, Fla.- The La Salle softball team dropped their first game in the Stetson Classic falling 8-1 to no. 25 Kansas.  Linnette Siedler paced the Explorers with two hits while Mackenzie Obert scored the team's sole run off an RBI from Tori Gollie.

The Explorers hang with the 25th ranked Jayhawks for much of the game. Senior Alicia Aughton threw 4.1 innings allowing only one earned run while striking out two Jayhawks. Junior Mary Cate Scott came on in relief and struck out seven Kansas batters in just 2.2 innings.

Kansas jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning thanks to a Lily Behrmann homerun and were able to able to double the lead to 2-0 an inning later. However Aughton was able to limit the damage in the fourth as with the bases loaded and only one out she forced two straight groundouts to the infield and didn't allow Kansas to put up more than one in the inning.

La Salle answered back in the bottom of the inning and cut the Jayhawks lead to 2-1. Mackenzie Obert started things off with an infield single. After Erica Reis moved her into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, Tori Gollie came through in the clutch with a single down the left field line that allowed Obert to score from second base.

Each team held each other in check the next two innings and they went to the seventh inning with just one run separating them. The Jayhawks were able to blow things open in the seventh as they scored six runs off of five hits and were able to capitalize on multiple Explorer errors in the field.

Linnette Siedler led the way with two hits in game one while Christina Bascara, Suzanne Swanicke, Obert, and Gollie each added one of their own. Mary Cate Scott recorded seven strikeouts in just 2.2 innings pitched in relief in the loss allowing only one earned run.

The Explorers were scheduled to face the host Stetson Hatters in the afternoon but the game was cancelled due to rain. La Salle will resume the action tomorrow as they face off against Tennessee Chattanooga at 1:30 and will face Stetson at 6:40. The Stetson Classic
