Seniors Combine For Seven Goals in 19-11 Senior Day Setback To Richmond

PHILADELPHIA - A nine-goal Richmond run in the first half was the deciding factor in the La Salle lacrosse squad's 19-11 regular season finale loss on Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.

The Explorers conclude their season at 8-8 overall, 4-4 in Atlantic 10 play.

The senior class combined for seven of the team's 11 goals on Senior Day. The team honored its seven senior players and two senior managers in a pregame ceremony, and the Class of 2015 goes out as the most winning class in program history. This year's seniors won 39 games in their career, bettering last year's senior class which was the most winning class at the time with 35 wins. Among the honorees were: Claire Andrews, Caitlyn Brostrand, Maddy Collins, Alanna Diffendal, Anastasia Fries, Kelly Furman and Erin McCabe, along with managers Lauren Ignacio and Danielle Williams.

Brostrand made the most of her senior day, draining four goals and assisting on another. Brostrand finishes with 168 career points to rank third all-time in program history. She did that on 145 goals and 23 assists; her 145 goals also ranks third-most in program history. She also finished with 76 career draw controls to rank seventh all-time. Furman concluded her career with 29 assists to rank seventh in program history; she also played in 65 games in four years to tie for the program record in games played. Diffendal also inked her name in the record books, finishing with 28 career assists to tie for eighth in program history. Diffendal recorded 15 of those assists this year to tie for fifth most in a single season in program history.

Katelyn Fay added three goals for the Explorers.

Bailey Zerr and Charlett Stevenson led the Spiders (9-8, 6-2 Atlantic 10) with four goals apiece, and four other players scored two each.

Richmond got on the board with two quick goals in the first 2:09 of the game, but a three-goal La Salle rally gave the Explorers a 3-2 lead. Fay put the Explorers on the board at 26:52, taking a pass from Allee Ilgenfritz.

The Explorers took the lead on back-to-back well executed stall plays. Defender Abby O'Donnell held the ball for over three minutes on the Richmond end of the field to set up a play that got the ball to Brostrand. Brostrand rocketed the ball in on a one-on-one situation to tie the game at 2-2 at 22:58. O'Donnell and Furman combined to stall again for another two-plus minutes to set up the same play to Brostrand. Brostrand then ran the ball up from about the 25-yard line and sank an incredible shot taken from a very wide angle to put the Explorers on top with 18:53 left in the first half.

Richmond's Brooke Wilson broke up the Explorer rally with an unassisted shot at 17:23, which proved to spark the nine-goal run as the Spiders took an 11-3 lead. Brostrand scored her third of the game with 51 seconds left in the first half for an 11-4 halftime score.

Erin McCabe opened scoring just over a minute into the second half to get within 11-5, but Richmond's Katie Trainer responded by drawing a foul and sinking the free position shot.

Fay scored a woman-up free position shot two minutes later for a 12-6 score.

The Spiders drew a yellow card, but drained two woman-down goals in that span. They pushed their lead to as many as 10, but the Explorers scored four of the game's final six goals for the final 19-11 score.

Richmond owned a 37-31 shot advantage and dominated draw controls 24-8. The squads were even with 20 ground ball pickups each, and the Explorers forced the Spiders into 16 turnovers to 11 La Salle miscues.

Gabby Antonelli recorded 12 saves in the loss. Antonelli finishes the season with a 10.08 goals against average, which is the fourth best single-season GAA in program history.

Richmond's Emily Boyce was credited with the win in goal, making eight saves in 45:08. Michaela Aymong played the remaining 14:52, making three stops.
