Box Score MERION STATION, Pa. –Saint Joseph's Stefan Kancylarz delivered the game-winning double with two outs in the 13
th inning to give the Hawks a 9-8 victory over La Salle on Friday afternoon at Smithson Field.
Deon Stafford reached on a fielder's choice grounder before Kancylarz doubled off La Salle righty
Tom Fazzini (L, 1-3) to score the freshman from first. Fazzini entered the game with two outs in the 9
th and worked out of jams in the 10
th and 12
th.
SJU freshman Justin Aungst (W, 3-0) kept the Explorers at bay in extras, tossing four shutout innings while allowing just one hit.
The Hawks scored five runs in the bottom of the 9
th to tie the game at 8-8 and force extra innings, tagging La Salle relievers
Adam Cherry for three runs and Bill Worswick for two.
Collin McGowan finished 4-for-7 with four runs scored while
Cameron Johnson and
Mark Williams had two hits each.
The Explorers used early offense to jump out to a lead, scoring four runs over the first two innings and adding a three spot in the 4th.
Josh Savakinus got the Explorers going with a sac fly in the top of the 1
st.
After the Hawks scored two in the home half,
Collin McGowan doubled in two runs to retake the lead before
Mark Williams made it 4-2 with an RBI single in the top of the 2nd.
Williams added a two-run double in the 4
th which
Joey Ravert followed with an RBI single to put the visitors up 7-2. La Salle also scored a run in the top of the 9
th on
Cameron Johnson sacrifice fly to make it 8-3.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. from Smithson Field.
