La Salle Splits Two to Close out Tribe Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.- The La Salle volleyball team split their two games on the final day of the Tribe Invitational. The Explorers finished second in the tournament thanks to tiebreakers as three teams all finished with 2-1 records. Freshman Jensen Sharrits and junior Ashley Felton were each named to the All-Tournament Team.

La Salle grabbed a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-22) win over Gardner-Webb while dropping straight sets to the hosts William & Mary (22-25, 26-28, 23-25).

Felton led the tournament with a hitting percentage of .333 over the three games while sophomore Rachel Carr was not far behind at .300. Senior Laura Kuhlmeier recorded 32 kills which was the second most in the Tribe Invitational averaging 2.91 kills per set.

The Explorers were able to grind out three close sets against Gardner-Webb on their way to a 3-0 win.

After falling behind 21-20 in the opening set La Salle was able to rally on its way to a 25-23 set win. A pair of kills from Felton in addition to a block from Felton and freshman Taylor Hite helped La Salle close out the set. Felton, Kuhlmeier, and Carr all finished the set with three kills.

Set two saw the Explorers jump out to a 10-5 lead and not look back. Six La Salle players recorded kills over that opening stretch to give them a comfortable lead from which they would not look back as they ultimately took the set 25-18. Carr led the way with four kills in the frame on only seven swings for a .571 hitting percentage in the set.

La Salle was able to close out the match with a 25-22 win in set three. Again they jumped out to an early lead, however, Gardner-Webb fought back to even things up late in the set at 22-22. Three consecutive points fueled by a kill from sophomore Hannah McGary helped La Salle close out the set and match. Felton led the way with four kills in the set.

Hite finished with 28 assists in the win while three Explorers had double digit digs in the match. Hite, Kuhlmeier and Sharrits all finished with double-digit digs with Sharrits leading the way with 24.
