Explorers Defeated By Richmond Despite Hitting 13 Three-Pointers


RICHMOND, Va. – La Salle held an eight-point lead in the early going but foul trouble and a talented and balanced Richmond team proved to be too much to handle as the Spiders captured a 83-61 victory at the Robins Center on Wednesday night. Junior Jordan Price led the Explorers with 19 points, while classmate Cleon Roberts and sophomore Johnnie Shuler each had 15.
 
"I think our effort was solid," head coach Dr. John Giannini said. "But we really passed the ball poorly. We had some guys have a lot of a turnovers and not a lot of assists."
 
Shuler also led the team with a career-high eight rebounds and set a career-best with five three-pointers. As a team, La Salle connected on a season-high 13 three-pointers.
 
Terry Allen led the Spiders (10-6, 2-2 A-10) with a 26-point, 16-rebound performance. Marshall Wood added 17 and ShawnDre' Jones scored 16. T.J. Cline had 13 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.
 
La Salle hit five straight three-pointers in the first seven minutes of play and took a 15-7 lead at the 12:50 mark. The Spiders responded with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to gain control of the game.
 
Playing with just seven scholarship players for the fourth straight game, the Explorers were hurt by foul trouble to sophomores Amar Stukes and Tony Washington. Both picked up three fouls in the first half and got their fourth foul early in the second half.
 
UR took advantage, extending the lead to double-digits late in the first half and led by at least 10 the entire second stanza.
 
The Explorers (5-9, 1-3 A-10) remain on the road to visit Rhode Island on Saturday at 2:30 PM. The game will be nationally televised on the NBC Sports Network.
