PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle Men's Soccer team (7-7, 2-3 A-10) came up with a crucial 1-0 Atlantic 10 win over the Dayton Flyers (5-8-2, 1-3-1 A-10) on Wednesday night under the lights of McCarthy Stadium. In net,
Cameron Keys registered his fourth career shutout, making three saves in the process.
Junior midfielder
Sixtus Akinlosotu scored his first goal of the season in the first half of the match. The ball came off of a throw in by
Zach Rutherford that was perfectly deflected by
Johnny Ciarlante to the open Akinlosotu in front of the net. This came just minutes after Akinlosotu narrowly missed a different scoring opportunity. After the game, Head Coach
Rob Irvine called him a "grinder" and spoke highly of his work ethic.
"We're in a spot right now where we'll do whatever it takes to win," Irvine following the victory.Â
La Salle displayed great defense the rest of the way and managed to hold off an attacking Dayton offense that leads the conference in shots this season by a wide margin. The Explorers even outshot their opponents, 9-8, during the game.
"They had their chances," Irvine said. "But at critical times and in dangerous spots, we did what was needed."Â
Tony Daniele and
Conor Nichols each put two shots on net, while
Matt Robinson added one.
The win puts
Rob Irvine's team in much better position with sights on the postseason. The Explorers are set to begin a three-game road trip that begins on Saturday at George Mason at 7:00 PM.Â
