PHILADELPHIA- The La Salle volleyball team faced VCU on Sunday afternoon in the Tom Gola to wrap up a weekend of Atlantic 10 play. The Rams topped La Salle in three sets, with scores of 25-16, 25-23, and 25-17.
La Salle was unable to gain momentum in the first set and the Rams grabbed an early lead to set the pace for the entire match. VCU bested the Explorers with a .387 attack percentage against La Salle's .147 percentage in the first set. The Rams held the Explorers back defensively as well, posting three blocks in set one.
La Salle pushed back in set two, to trail the Rams by just two at the end of the set. Jenny Edwards improved to six kills in the second set and Hayley Belcik posted a service ace for the Explorers. Ultimately, the Rams took the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Explorers battled point for point with the Rams in the beginning of set three, with the game leader changing five times, but the Rams held out and took the final set 25-17 to win the match. Freshman
Rachel Carr made her debut appearance in the Tom Gola and recorded a kill for La Salle in set three.
Edwards led the Explorers with 11 kills and five digs, as well as a service ace.
Devin Corah posted eight kills and
Bryanna Davis tallied seven.
Edwards and
Catherine Edgington each posted two blocks for La Salle.
Jensen Sharrits recorded 12 sigs and
Kathryn Wood tallied 52 assists.
La Salle will return to the court on Friday to host Duquesne at 7:00 PM at Tom Gola.
