PHILADELPHIA- Despite a strong offensive presence from the Explorers, the volleyball team dropped a five set thriller to Atlantic 10 competitor Duquesne on Friday. La Salle was defeated by the Dukes in a 2-3 contest with scores of 25-22, 23-25, 16-25, 25-17, 9-15.
While the Explorers exploded in set one to grab an early lead over the Dukes, they dropped set two after Duquesne made a comeback. With
Devin Corah pacing the Explorers, the team averaged a .194 attack percentage in comparison to the Duke's .100 in set one. La Salle recorded 17 kills in set two, but it was not enough to hold off Duquesne, who grabbed the set 23-25.
While La Salle dropped the third set 16-25 to bring the match to 1-2, the team recovered in set four with seven kills from Corah and six from
Bryanna Davis. The Explorers led the majority of the set, giving up the lead only once but recovered immediately. La Salle took set three handily in 25-17 score.
In the final set, both teams battled point for point until the Dukes broke away at 8-9 with two kills from Kori Johnson. The Dukes moved quickly to grab the final set in a 9-15 contest to take the victory.
Corah recorded a season high 25 kills in the match, while Davis posted a career high of 17 digs. Freshman Jenny Edwards recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 17 digs for the Explorers.
Jensen Sharrits led the match with 29 digs and
Kathryn Wood recorded a career high 57 assists. The Dukes out-blocked La Salle 10-12 to hold the Explorers down defensively.
La Salle will return to action next weekend at Tom Gola when the team hosts Rhode Island at 7:00 PM.
