PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle Men's Swimming team is set to begin the 2016-17 season this weekend as it hosts the Philly Relays on Friday at 6:00 PM. The team, coached by
Jamie Platt, has lofty expectations for the year.
"My expectation for the team success," said Platt, who is in his 15
th year with the program and is at the helm of both the Men's and Women's teams. Since Platt's arrival, the Explorers have set 63 school records, won 19 Atlantic 10 individual titles and set three A-10 conference records. He has mentored two A-10 Rookies of the Year and a US Olympic Trials qualifier.
Last season, the men finished third at the Atlantic 10 Championships, just 8.5 points behind second place. They gathered five medals, including the top spot in two events. The performance was highlighted by the 400 medley relay team, which won the event and set a new school record. Three of the four swimmers on that relay team will be returning for this season, including
Cameron Fadley.
"Swimming is a big group of individuals so each player has to perform themselves in order to have a good team result," Fadley said. "I want to finish top three to get points for my team."
Fadley took home two top-10 finishes in individual events at last year's A-10 Championships, and will be looked upon as a senior leader this year. He'll be joined by fellow seniors
Mattias Glenesk,
Chase Ott,
Strahinja Stankovic, and
Jerry Gravel.
"I think me along with the other seniors have been doing a good job getting the freshmen involved with the team," said Gravel.
Platt talked highly of the incoming freshman class and the impact they'll have on this team.
"We have a great freshman class. They'll make an impact right off the bat," said Platt.
The Men's Swimming season starts on Friday with the Philly Relays and includes a quick turnaround as they continue on Saturday at Villanova with Drexel. The events continue throughout the calendar year and bleed into mid-February when the A-10 Championships take place in Geneva, Ohio.
