LORETTO, Pa. - Junior
Kendall Kreider and sophomore
Logan Oh each had goals for the La Salle field hockey team, who battled back from a one-goal deficit late in the second half to force overtime against Saint Francis U. A goal from Red Flash freshman Livvy Webb proved to be the difference, however, and gave the home team a 3-2 win in Atlantic 10 action on Friday afternoon.
La Salle came out of the gates attacking, firing three shots toward the opposing net through the first seven minutes of action. The contest remained scoreless until the 22nd minute, when Oh accepted a pass from junior
April Stein and reversed a shot into the back of the cage to give the Explorers a 1-0 lead.
The Red Flash responded just before the end of the opening period, as a penalty corner led to the equalizer from Shannon Pereira just before the halftime clock expired. La Salle held a 6-4 advantage in shots through the first 35 minutes of action, while SFU held a slim 4-3 margin in penalty corners.
La Salle senior goalkeeper
Rachel Hartman fended off the first two shots on frame in the second half by Saint Francis, moving her into eighth place on the La Salle career saves list. But the Red Flash was able to sneak one past her and take the lead in the 45th minute when Kyra Castano scored off a rebound to put the score at 2-1.
The Exploers were able to get their offense going over the next 15 minutes, working a pair of penalty corners and attempting three shots in the span. The third, which came off the stick of Kreider, tied the contest at 2-2 with just under 12 minutes remaining in regulation. Senior
Devin Muracco had a chance to regain the lead for the Explorers in the 61st minute, but missed wide with her attempt.
The match moved into overtime after neither team was able to score over the final minutes of regulation. In that extra session, Hartman made a pair of saves that kept the game tied but Webb finished her opportunity off a pass from Brea Seabrook in the 80th minute that gave the Red Flash the win.
La Salle concludes its season on Sunday, Oct. 30 at home against Georgetown. A ceremony honoring the team's four seniors: Hartman, Muracco,
Abbey Lawrence and
Gina Smith, will take place prior to the start, which is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
