MIAMI – Senior
Jordan Price had a team-high 23 points and junior
B.J. Johnson added 19 for the La Salle University men's basketball team (4-4), who saw Georgetown (6-4) break a 67-67 tie with a decisive 11-1 run to come away with a 93-78 win at the Hoophall Miami Invitational on Saturday.
The contest was a foul-filled affair that featured a combined 58 infractions called between the two teams. The Hoyas took full advantage of their 22 trips to the free-throw line in the opening half, converting 19 of them while the Explorers went 9-for-14 from the charity stripe.
A pair from the line by Akoy Agau extended Georgetown's lead to double figures at 28-18 before a pair of foul shots from
Pookie Powell and a three-pointer from Miami native
Cleon Roberts trimmed the margin to 28-23.
Price finished on a driving hoop as he was fouled, then converted on the free throw to cap an 8-0 spurt and pull the Explorers to within two. Two minutes later, Powell turned a steal into a transition bucket to cut the deficit to just one at 31-30.
Georgetown would go into the locker room with a six-point lead thanks in large part to LJ Peak, who had 15 points and was 7-of-8 from the foul line. Price matched him with 15 points of his own in 16 minutes of action.
After a free throw from Jagan Mosely pushed the Hoyas lead back to 10 with 16:47 remaining in the second half, the Explorers began to claw their way back. A layup from Powell and another from Price jumpstarted a quick 8-1 run that cut the advantage to 57-54 with 13:36 on the clock.
The deficit remained between two and six points over the next five minutes, when free throws from Price tied the game at 67-all just past the midway point of the half.
From there, however, La Salle saw its offense go cold as it missed its next four shots as Georgetown opened up a 78-68 advantage. A three-point play with 4:07 left from Price briefly cut it to 82-75, before Pryor knocked down a tough three from the left wing with the shot clock running down.
The trifecta gave the Hoyas a double-digit cushion, which they would maintain the rest of the way.
Peak lead Georgetown with 24 points including a 12-for-15 performance from the free-throw line. As a team, the Hoyas hit 36 of 43 from the charity stripe (83.7%).
La Salle returns home for its next game on Saturday, Dec. 17 against Florida Gulf Coast. Tipoff at Gola Arena is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
