PHILADELPHIA –
Adreana Miller hit the game-winning three with .2 seconds on the clock to help the Explorers erase a seven-point deficit in overtime and clinch a 58-56 win over Penn at the Palestra on Wednesday evening.
A
Shalina Miller jumper with 38 seconds left cut the Quaker lead to one point, and La Salle got a stop on Penn's final possession thanks to a block from
Amy Griffin. The junior swatted a jumper from Penn's Anna Ross with eight ticks left.
Griffin corralled the rebound and brought the ball up the court to find Miller for the game-winner. Miller finished with 18 points, going 4-for-8 from beyond the arc and 4-for-4 from the foul line while Griffin poured in a team-best 22 points and eight rebounds.
The Quakers started the overtime period on an 8-1 run before a pair of foul shots from Griffin and a trey from Miller cut Penn's lead to 55-53 with 1:17 to play in the extra period. Penn's Kasey Chambers hit a free throw with 58 seconds left to make it 56-53 before the Explorers scored five unanswered points to close the game.
The Explorers also used rallied near the end of regulation to send the game into overtime. Trailing 45-38 with 4:20 to play, La Salle rattled off seven straight points to tie the game at 45-45 on a Griffin jumper with 38 seconds left.
Penn's Michelle Nwokedi hit a layup that put Penn in front 47-45 before Griffin forced overtime on a game-tying jumper with 3.6 seconds left.
Alston dished out a game-high 10 assists to go with four points and nine rebounds while
Sofilia Ngwafang tied her season-high with eight points and pulled down five rebounds.
The Explorers begin a three-game homestand on Saturday as they host the Fairfield Stags in Tom Gola Arena. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
