Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Halted at Rhode Island, 62-52

KINGSTON, R.I. – The La Salle women's basketball fell to the Rhode Island Rams 62-52 on Wednesday night at the Ryan Center despite a 21-point effort from junior Micahya Owens

Owens hit a pair of free throws to cut La Salle's deficit to seven points with 1:15 left in the game but the Explorers weren't able to get a stop on Rhody's ensuing possession. Owens finished 8-for-17 from the floor, including 3-for-6 from three-point range.

Rhody's Samantha Tabakman hit a free throw following Owens' foul shots to push the URI lead to 60-52 before Charise Wilson hit a layup in the closing seconds to keep La Salle at bay.

Tabakman had 18 of her 29 points in the second half as the Rams were able to hold off several runs from the Explorers after the break. Charise Wilson also finished in double figures for the home team, chipping in 14 points and three assists.

After falling behind by double digits in the 2nd quarter, La Salle was able to make it a six-point game at halftime. The Explorers opened the 3rd quarter on a 7-3 run to make it a two-point game and were within striking distance for much of the game but couldn't find the equalizer.

Amy Griffin tallied 17 points and four rebounds for La Salle while Jasmine Alston stuffed the box score with 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

La Salle returns home this weekend as they host the VCU Rams on Sunday afternoon for a 1 p.m. tipoff from Tom Gola Arena.
