PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle baseball team scored four runs in the 7th inning to rally for a 6-5 win over Delaware State on Wednesday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field.
Following a
Chase Arnold sacrifice fly that made it a one-run game,
Ethan Springston drilled a two-out, two-run homer to right to cap a four-run 7th and give the Explorers a 6-5 lead. After a 1-2-3 8th from La Salle's
Greg Krug,
Tom Fazzini retired the side in order in the 9th for his fourth save of the year.
The La Salle bullpen was spectacular, hurling 5.2 scoreless innings in relief of starter
Mike Anthony. The Hornets mustered just two baserunners against the combination of
CJ Pruitt,
Jorge Jimenez, Krug and Fazzini.
Jimenez (W, 2-14) earned the win after keeping the Hornets at bay in the 6th and 7th, allowing a hit while striking out three.
CJ Pruitt got two outs to end the 4th, stranding two runners in scoring position before throwing a scoreless 5th.
The Hornets scored five runs over the first two innings to take a 5-0 lead before a
Drew Jarmuz double got La Salle on the board in the 2nd.
Kevin McGowan led off the 3rd with a double and later scored on a balk to cut DSU's lead to 5-2.
Trailing 5-2 heading into the bottom of the 7th, McGowan again led off the inning with a double and moved to third when Jared Melone reached on a Delaware State fielding error. Joey Ravert brought McGowan home with an infield single, making it a two-run game. La Salle is back in action this weekend for their final nonconference series of the season, a three-game set against St. John's. The Explorers will play the opener against the Red Storm at a neutral site on Friday (NYIT's Angelo Lorenzo Memorial Field) before finishing up with a doubleheader Saturday in Queens.
