PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The Explorers scored twice in the late innings but it wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit in a 5-2 loss to the Villanova Wildcats at Villanova Ballpark on Wednesday afternoon.
Jared Melone scored both of La Salle's runs while
Justin Jacko and
Chase Arnold each finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.
La Salle starter
Mike Anthony (L, 1-4) had a decent outing until running into trouble in the 6
th inning. The righty had allowed just two runs through five innings before allowing a walk and two singles and exiting with one out in the 6
th.
All five of Villanova's runs were charged to Anthony after
Greg Krug gave up a single and two walks to allow both inherited runners to score.
Billy Worswick earned the final out in the 6
th and one in the 7
th before
Michael Flax and
Tom Fazzini finished the game.
Jacko singled in a run in the 7
th before Arnold delivered an RBI triple in the 8
th to make it a three-run game. The Explorers had two runners on and the tying run at the plate in the 9
th but couldn't produce the timely hit.
The Explorers return to Atlantic 10 action this weekend with a three-game series at Massachusetts beginning Friday.
