Explorers Drop Doubleheader at St. Joes

MERION STATION, Pa.- The La Salle softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Saint Joseph's falling 3-1 in the opener before dropping the second game 7-1 on Wednesday.

Juniors Suzanne Swanicke and Michelle Hagarty picked up RBIs in the losses.

Senior Mary Cate Scott (10-5) threw a complete game in the first game of the afternoon. The Hawks were able to muster nine hits but she limited them to just three runs while striking out a pair.

After St. Joes jumped out to a 1-0 lead, the Explorers answered in the fifth inning. Swanicke doubled home freshman Emma Schweigert who had led off the inning by reaching on an error.

The Hawks responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead at 3-1 which would be the final. Schweigert also singled in game one as well as drew a walk.

Game two saw the Hawks jump out to an early lead and not look back on its way to a 7-1 win.

The Explorers grabbed their sole run in the top of the fifth when Hagarty reached on a fielding error allowing senior Erica Reis to score. Reis had reached base with a leadoff single to right field.

La Salle recorded seven hits in the second game but were unable to manufacture those hits into runs. Reis had a pair of hits while senior Kendra Heyer, juniors Hagarty, Christina Bascara, Swanicke and freshman Schweigert each recoded one hit.
