Four-Run 7th Lifts La Salle Over GW, 6-3

WASHINGTON – The La Salle baseball team scored four times in the 7th inning to seal a 6-3 victory in the series finale against George Washington on Sunday afternoon at Tucker Field.

Trailing 3-2 after six innings, the Explorers scored four runs in the 7th to rally for the win. Derek Prucnal ignited the rally with a leadoff single, and the Explorers loaded the bases with no outs after Brett Simon and Brian Tagoe worked walks.

Kevin McGowan tied the game with a sacrifice fly before Jared Melone and Joey Ravert both delivered RBI singles to make it 5-3 in favor of La Salle. Melone scored the inning's final run on a wild pitch to push the lead to 6-3.

Billy Worswick (W, 1-1) took over in the 6th for the Explorers, tossing three shutout innings to earn the win. Tom Fazzini (S, 5) faced the minimum in the 9th to nail down the victory.

The game played scoreless until the Explorers grabbed a 1-0 lead on a Brian Tagoe sacrifice fly in the 5th. Luke Reilly made the start for Blue and Gold, hurling four shutout innings before Jared Mattera entered in the 5th.

Mattera was charged with three runs in one-plus inning, giving up two in the 5th and allowing a leadoff triple in the 6th before giving way to Worswick.

The Explorers host Delaware on Tuesday afternoon in the second round of the Liberty Bell Classic.
