FAIRFAX, Va. – The La Salle baseball team couldn't overcome an early offensive output from George Mason in a 9-7 loss to the Patriots in the series finale at Spuhler Field on Sunday.
Drew Jarmuz went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI and
Connor Hinchliffe had three RBI for the Explorers.
Yan Carlo Rivera doubled in a run in the 8
th inning to make it a two-run game but La Salle couldn't get any closer.
La Salle used a four-run 3
rd inning to get back in the game after the Patriots scored seven times over the first two frames to jump out to a 7-2 lead. A Hinchliffe grounder brought in two runs in the 1
st, and the freshman had a sac fly in the 3
rd.
Jarmuz doubled in a run later in the inning,
Joey Ravert scored on an error and
Ben Faso singled in a run to cap the four-run 3rd.
Jorge Jimenez made the start for La Salle but allowed the first five baserunners to reach without getting an out before the Explorers went to the bullpen.
Ryan Wanner came in for Jimenez, and wiggled out of a bases loaded jam with no outs using a strike out and a double play.
Wanner (L, 1-1) allowed three runs in the 2
nd inning and was saddled with the loss. The righty loaded the bases with one out in the 2
nd before turning the ball over to
Michael Flax.
Reliever Tyler Kardas (W, 3-1) pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless baseball out of the pen to earn the win for the Patriots. Zach Mort (S, 7) recorded the final three outs to earn the save, pitching around a two-out Jarmuz single.
The Explorers host Rider on Tuesday in midweek action at Hank DeVincent Field.
