Lori King '97 Becomes Second Person To Swim Around Bermuda

Lori King

Women's Swimming and Diving | June 23, 2016

HAMILTON, Bermuda – Former La Salle swimmer Lori (Baiocchi) King '97 became just the second person to swim around the island of Bermuda last week. She covered the 36.5 mile swim in just over 21 hours, making her the fastest to swim around the island.

For her incredible achievement, she was named Swimming World's Performance of the Week.

King began her swim at noon on June 15 and finished at 9:19 AM on June 16. She is the second solo swimmer to complete this feat (Sean O'Connell in 1976 swam the perimeter of the island in 43 hours) and the first woman.

"This was a team effort," King told Swimming World. "This was not my swim…I cannot own it. This would not have happened without the role that each of my incredible crew played. I owe this feat and share this incredible milestone in my career with all of them."

The wind was at King's back to start the swim, but she had to contend with two to three-foot waves and strong headwinds for a 16 mile stretch from Fort St. Catherine's to Pompano. Her training included completing the 2015, seven-day, 120 mile 8 bridges Hudson River Swim.

She swam for La Salle from 1993-97 in the 200 breaststroke. After graduation, she did not return to swimming until 2004 and competed in her first open water swim in 2010.

A native of Norristown, PA, she attended Gwynedd Mercy Academy.
