PHILADELPHIA – La Salle swimmer
Mattias Glenesk will swim the 1500 meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska on Saturday, July 2, at 11 AM Eastern time.
"Having a presence at the biggest swim meet, level wise, through USA Swimming and to be on the national map is very important for our program," head coach
Jamie Platt said. "It's a great accomplishment by Mattias."
In December at the AT&T Winter Nationals, Glenesk finished in 12th place out of 35 entries in the 1500 meter freestyle race thanks to a time of 15:49.74. Glenesk met the qualifying standard of 15:49.99 which qualified him for Trials.
"I made it by two tenths of a second in a 1500 meter swim," Glenesk said. "I'm excited. It's probably the proudest moment of my life."
Glenesk, who is heading into his senior year, has enjoyed an outstanding career at La Salle in the pool. He was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year in 2014 after winning the 1650 yard freestyle at A-10s. The past two seasons he has finished second in the event at the Atlantic 10 Championship.
It marks the second straight U.S. Olympic Trials that an Explorer will be represented. Blase Szyszko competed in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials.
Fans can watch Glenesk's race online via the NBC Sports Extra app. If he advances to Sunday's finals, the Austin, Texas native will swim at 7:45 PM Eastern on NBC.
