EASTON, Pa. - The La Salle Explorers continued its winning streak today against Lafayette to bring its record to 5-0, a first in program history. The Explorers controlled the match through all three sets, besting the Leopards 3-0 (25-15, 25-10, 25-10)
The Explorers opened the first set battling point for point with the Leopards, but pulled away with a push from the attack on the serving line to take the set 25-15.
"We started off slow in set one, our first set on the road," head coach
Caitlin Schweihofer said. "Having a young team, traveling is something that we're not very used to, so it's just a matter of getting used to and of us just making that adjustment quickly."
In the following two sets, the Explorers opened with aggression, taking a firm lead over the Leopards. They took advantage of serving opportunities, posting five aces in the second set.
Freshman Devon Corah paced the Explorers, recording seven digs over the match, while
Bryanna Davis posted six kills. Senior
Ashley Felton posted five kills to average a .833 percentage. The team averaged a .315 percentage overall on attack.
"Tonight I think that our serving was really aggressive at all points," said Felton. "We were able to keep the other team out of system and then when they were in system, we were able to defend their balls a lot better."
Freshman
Kathryn Wood recorded 16 assists for the Blue and Gold, while libero
Jensen Sharrits led the defensive charge, recording 12 digs overall. The experience will help the team of young Explorers as they continue on the road, facing opponents in Queens, N.Y this weekend at the St. John's Invitational.
"I love the opportunity to get people playing time and we had performances from thirteen people tonight, so everyone was able to get some playing time," said Schweihofer. "That's what we want on our team, so we have depth on our roster and we want to get people the experience they need as we build up to conference play."
The Explorers will return to the court this weekend, to face Binghamton, Niagara, and St. John's at the Jack Birmingham Invitational in Queens, N.Y. The will open their tournament play against Binghamton at 4:00 pm on Friday, September 2.
