PROVIDENCE, R.I- The La Salle volleyball team faced Providence and Holy Cross in day two of the Friar Classic. The Explorers dropped their first match against the Friars in a four-set contest, with Providence besting La Salle 3-1 [25-22, 22-25, 18-25, 24-26].
The Explorers then faced Holy Cross to finish out the weekend play. The Crusaders topped the Explorers in a 3-0 contest [17-25, 25-27, 25-27].
La Salle opened the first set with force against Providence, besting then 25-22, but slipped out of the contest when the Friars took the next three sets to win the match. Providence was able to control the game defensively, with 16 total blocks to La Salle's eight blocks.
Against Providence,
Devin Corah led the match with 19 kills and posted one ace for the Explorers. Katie Wood recorded 40 assists over the four-set match and
Catherine Edgington tallied four blocks.
Jensen Sharrits posted 22 digs for La Salle.
The Crusaders led the charge in set one, grabbing a five point run at 8-10 and never letting up to capture the lead. La Salle led the second match, but was overpowered after the Crusaders took a five point run to bring the score to 22-24. From there the teams battled it out, but Holy Cross was able to edge out the Explorers in a 25-27 contest.
The Explorers were able to keep with the Crusaders in set three, but Holy Cross overpowered them offensively and took the final set 25-27 to complete the match. Edgington posted nine kills and four blocks in the match.
Madison Kuch followed with eight kills, while
Ashley Felton posted seven. Wood tallied 27 assists and eight digs against the Crusaders.
The Explorers will continue their season on the road, facing Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
