KINGSTON, R.I- The La Salle volleyball team was bested by Rhode Island on Saturday in the second game of conference play. The Rams topped the Explorers in a 0-3 contest [18-25, 15-25, 13-25]. The Explorers are now 8-9 overall and 0-2 in Atlantic 10 play.
The Rams opened the first set with a four point run early at 2-4 to grab a lead over La Salle. Despite back to back kills from
Jennifer Edwards and
Devin Corah and a service ace from
Emily McCann at 14-21, the Explorers were unable to gain the lead. La Salle fought to climb back but the Rams took the first set 18-25.
Rhode Island again broke away at 4-6 in the second set to gain a lead over the Explorers. The Explorers answered with a three point run of their own, with freshman Hayley Becik posting a service ace, but could not gain the lead against Rhode Island. The Rams crept ahead to take the match 15-25.
The Rams jumped out early in the first set, posting three before La Salle was able to get on the board.
Catherine Edgington posted an ace to get the Explorers back into contention with a four point run to tie the score at 5-5. Rhode Island reclaimed their lead at 5-9 with a four point run that they increased through the rest of the set. La Salle fell in the final set 13-25.
Corah led the Explorers with seven kills, while
Madison Kuch posted six.
Kathryn Wood recorded 15 assists and five digs for the Explorers.
Belcik recorded two aces and Edgington and Corah each posted one. Edgington also posted three blocks for La Salle, while
Ashley Felton and Corah each recorded two.
Jensen Sharrits posted 11 digs and one ace for the Explorers.
La Salle will return to action next Friday at 7:00 PM when they face Davidson at Temple University to continue Atlantic 10 competition. The Explorers will then play VCU at Tom Gola on Sunday at 1:00 PM to wrap up the weekend.
