PHILADELPHIA- A balanced attack propelled the La Salle volleyball team over University of Maryland Eastern Shore in a Tuesday night matchup at Tom Gola Arena. With three Explorers registering double-digit kills, the team toughed it out for a 3-2 victory to earn their final nonconference win of the season.
With set scores of (25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-13), the team improved to a 12-13 record and have already eclipsed their 2016 record by a pair of games thus far.
The teams swapped set scores to split the match 1-1 to begin at the Gola before the Explorers took a 2-1 advantage with a stunning third set victory.
After UMES jumped out to a 10-6 lead on a seven point run, La Salle crawled back with a five point run punctuated by a pair of aces from
Bryanna Davis. When the Hawks were forced to take a timeout at 15-15, a pair of kills from
Madison Kuch and Davis each solidified the lead for the La Salle to capture its best set of the night. Â The Blue and Gold averaged a .342 percentage in the set, then using their momentum to tough it out for the remaining two sets.
When La Salle dropped the fourth set in a narrow 25-21 margin, the teams were forced into a tiebreaker set for La Salle's 10
th time this season. The Explorers opened with a kill each from Davis and
Catherine Edgington in her first set appearance of the night.
After the Hawks fumbled through three errors, La Salle's Kuch and Edgington traded kills to carry the team through the final points. The three kills from Kucha and two from Edgington were supplemented by one from Corah to end the match as the Hawks crawled closer at 15-13.
Davis paced the attack, with a team-high 17 kills and three aces on the night. Corah and Kuch followed with 16 each. Jenny Edwards also added a pair of aces while contributing 22 digs against the Hawks.
Kathryn Wood registered her tenth match with over 40 assists, chipping in 46 on the night.
On the defensive end, Davis,
Reilly Lowe and Edgington, in her brief appearance added two blocks apiece of La Salle's eight total.
Jensen Sharrits tied to lead the match with 24 digs, while
Alyssa Cianciulli added 12.
La Salle will take a two-game road trip as they return to conference play, when the team takes on a pair of southern schools. In the second meeting of the two teams, La Salle will play at George Mason to kick off the weekend on Friday, Oct. 27 before facing George Washington on Saturday, Oct. 28.
