Explorers Begin Big 5 Play on Monday at Penn

PHILADELPHIA -- The La Salle University men's basketball team (1-0) will tangle with Penn (0-1) in a Big 5 matchup at the Palestra on Monday evening. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The contest will be televised live on NBC Sports Philadelphia, and an audio broadcast of the game is also available via the TuneIn Radio App and Stretch Internet.

NEWS & NOTES
•Both teams will have a quick turnaround following their season openers, which took place on Saturday afternoon.
•The Explorers earned an impressive 61-40 win over Saint Peter's at Tom Gola Arena on Nov. 11.
•Senior B.J. Johnson had 15 points and 11 rebounds while redshirt junior Pookie Powell added a game-high 18 points.
•La Salle put together a fine defensive effort against the Peacocks, limiting them to just 30.6 percent shooting and 40 points overall.
•The total is the lowest allowed in college basketball through the first two days of the season, and the lowest by the Explorers since allowing 37 points against Lehigh on Dec. 1, 1973.
•Senior Tony Washington and freshman Miles Brookins shared the bulk of time at the center position and combined for 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
•The Explorers dominated down low, outscoring Saint Peter's by a 26-12 margin in the paint and outrebounding their opponent, 34-27.
•Senior Johnnie Shuler provided a spark defensively, entering the game in the first half with the Explorers holding an 18-16 lead.
•La Salle outscored Saint Peter's by a 12-3 margin during his on-court time in the opening half.
•The Explorers forced 17 turnovers and allowed SPU to shoot 8-for-29 from two-point range (27.6%).
 
SCOUTING PENN
•The Quakers dropped their opening contest of the 2017-18 season to Fairfield, 80-72, on Saturday.
•Sophomore Ryan Betley scored a team-high 20 points and added 10 rebounds, but struggled from the field (7-18 FG, 3-11 3FG).
•Senior guard Darnell Foreman had 17 points while sophomore forward AJ Brodeur added 13.
•Against the Stags, Penn had 39 three-point field goal attempts and hit on just nine of them (23.1%).
•The Quakers did take care of the basketball, turning the ball over just nine times.
•Penn was chosen to finish fourth in the Ivy League's Preseason Media Poll.
