PHILADELPHIA- Four Explorers scored at McCarthy Stadium on Friday night but it was not enough to stop the hot shooting Panthers as La Salle fell 17-11. The Explorers have split their record 4-4 on the season with the loss.
High Point jumped out to a quick lead, netting three consecutive goals within the first seven minutes of the contest. La Salle was able to recover with their own three goals from
Toni Massetti,
Courtney Woolford and
Brittany Edwards to bring the game to a 3-3 knot.
The Panthers broke away with another two goal run, stopped by a shot from senior
Nicole Black, who scored at 12:16 into play. High Point fired back with two three goal runs to end the first half with an 11-6 advantage.
The visitors never wavered in their lead for the rest of the game, though La Salle was able to trim down the gap to a three goal margin thanks to two more goals from Massetti and one apiece from Edwards and Woolford with 11:28 left to play.
The Blue and Gold was unable to stop the aggressive attack from the Pioneers, as they netted four consecutive goals to secure the lead with 10 minutes left in the second stanza.
Massetti tallied four total goals to lead La Salle scorers, while Woolford and Edwards each added three total of their own. Edwards also contributed two assists for La Salle.
Courtney Shoults led the defense, causing three turnovers while picking up five ground balls. Hailey Lester caused two turnovers to aid the Explorers defense.
Ashley Blanton and
Sayde Walker won two draws apiece, while both picking up one ground ball each on the day.
In goal,
Lynne Frankel tallied three saves in the first half.
Lucy Loughlin recorded nine saves in the net in the second stanza.
La Salle will open Atlantic 10 play at George Mason next weekend, facing the Patriots at 5:00 PM on Friday, March 31 in Fairfax, Va.
