PHILADELPHIA- The La Salle volleyball team will welcome
Angel Agu and
Scott Schweihofer as assistant coaches for the upcoming 2016-17 season, it was announced by head coach
Caitlin Schweihofer on Tuesday.
Schweihofer joins the squad after spending the 2016 season as an assistant coach for the University of Pennsylvania women's volleyball team. He also served as the interim head coach following the departure of Penn's head coach before joining La Salle this summer. He joins the Explorers with a wide array of coaching experience that will add new perspectives to the coaching staff.
Prior to Penn, Schweihofer spent two years at Atlantic 10 rival George Mason, where he served as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. He improved the Patriots to a 10-19 overall record, the best single season record since 2010 during his time at the university.
"Having previously coached in the Atlantic 10, Scott brings a solid understanding of the conference, as well as what is needed to be victorious," said head coach Schweihofer. "He will aide in our technical and tactical decision making and provide support for all position groups."
The former outside hitter also served as an indoor and sand assistant coach at Mercer University. He helped the team advance to the Atlantic Sun Tournament for the first time in four years during his time there. Schweihofer also led the College of Charleston volleyball team to a Southern Conference regular season title and an appearance in the conference championship before moving into the assistant position at Mercer.
Schweihofer has held assistant coaching positions at both Michigan State and Presbyterian College. While at Michigan State, he saw the team advance to the NCAA Championship Round of 16 in 2007. He spent four years at Limestone College, serving as the team captain and was a two-time MVP. Named the Saint's first all-conference player, his all-time statistics in aces, kills and kill attempts still lead the program.
Agu comes to La Salle with a winning attitude after a successful four year career at A-10 rival Dayton. The 6'2 middle blocker is a four-time Atlantic 10 champion with the Flyers and appeared in 83 matches over her career. Elected a team captain in her senior season, Agu has made four appearances in the NCAA tournament, advancing to the second round three times.
"Angel is a wonderful addition to our staff, as she played in an extremely successful collegiate program, and will continue to help La Salle volleyball develop and improve within the Atlantic 10," said head coach Schweihofer. "She has great energy and enthusiasm, and will work specifically with our middle blockers."
The Grapevine, Tx. native ranked second for the Flyers with .88 blocks/set in the 2015 campaign, while tallying a career best 140 kills and 100 blocks. Agu was named to the 2015 Dayton Invitational All-Tournament team after helping the squad to wins over Eastern Illinois and Cleveland State.
"I would like to thank
Caitlin Schweihofer and
Andrew Kroger for giving me the opportunity to join the the volleyball family here at La Salle," said Agu. "It is a great honor to work alongside two amazing coaches with years of notable experience. I am truly excited to contribute in helping this program reach new heights!"
Agu was a recipient of the 2015 Katie Hausfield Teammate award for her leadership through example, commitment to the game and support as a teammate for the Flyers. Additionally, she was a two-time nominee for the Northwestern Mutual Leadership Award.
Off the court, Agu demonstrated her leadership skills at Dayton as a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Council from 2014-2016. She led the coordination of the Recognition and Celebration of University of Dayton Student-Athletes Year End Showcase for over 400 guests as a member of SAAC.
The pair of coaches will make their debut with the team at the Bucknell Invitational to begin the season on August 25, facing the Bison's at 6:30 PM in Lewisburg, Pa.
