Box Score PHILADELPHIA – An epic comeback by the men's soccer team (0-1) in its first game of the season was spoiled as Loyola (Md.) (1-0) scored in front on a corner in the 103rd minute of the game, handing La Salle the loss in the second overtime period.
Sixtus Akinlosotu scored a dramatic equalizer with just 55 seconds left to tie the match at four apiece. The junior midfielder scored on a breakaway as he was fed by Matt Robinson when the team was actually down a man. Akinlosotu charged half length of the field on his own before beating the Loyola goalkeeper for the score.
It wasn't La Salle's only dramatic game-tying goal of the match. Earlier in the second half, Robinson punched in a penalty kick to equalize just four minutes after the Explorers gave up the lead.
Teams looked close to even throughout. They Greyhounds had been picked to win their conference in the preseason coaches' poll.
Newcomer Kenny Lassiter scored La Salle's other goal. Lassiter, a Syracuse transfer, knocked in a header in front after he was set up by Robinson and Johnny Ciarlante. Lassiter finished with five shots including two on goal.
In net, Cameron Keys was stellar. He finished with eight saves including a fully-extended diving stop at the end of the first half.
Head coach Rob Irvine and his team will take the next week before heading on the road for a match against DePaul at 5:00 PM on Friday, September 1.
