LEWISBURG, Pa.- The La Salle volleyball team picked up a pair of wins on day two of the Bucknell Invitational against Iona and NJIT to end the opening weekend of play. With this, the Explorers improve to 2-1 on the season.
The Explorers defeated Iona to start the day in a 3-2 (24-26, 25-20, 25-14, 25-14) contest before wrapping up against NJIT in a 3-0 contest.
After La Salle gave up the first set to the Gaels in an extended 26-24 score, the Explorers cruised to capture the next three sets to win their first match of the season.
The Explorers saw a 17 kill performance from
Devin Corah for the second time this weekend, while
Bryanna Davis added 13 kills of her own against the Gaels.
In her first weekend back after her redshirt season,
Hannah McGary made a strong comeback with four aces against the Gaels to lead the match. Rookie Alyssa Canciulli tallied two of her own, while classmate
Samantha Graver contributed one.
Defensively, the Explorers recorded seven total blocks against Iona's four. With middle blocker
Catherine Edgington sidelined by injury, several Explorers stepped up to contribute. Corah added three blocks to lead La Salle, while Davis and
Maya Barton each added a pair.
Katherine Wood led the match in assists, with 33 of La Salle's total 48. At libero,
Jensen Sharrits posted 19 digs, while Graved contributed nine.
In the final match of the weekend, the Explorers came out blazing against the Highlanders to sweep the match. La Salle jumped out with a 25-10 result in set one and didn't look back. They captured the next two sets in 25-11 and 25-13 finishes.
Graver led all attack with 15 kills one the day, while Corah added 13 of La Salle's 54 total. Graver made a splash in her first weekend playing for La Salle with two double digit kill games against Bucknell and NJIT.
Sharrits contributed four aces, while Corah tallied two in the match. Setter Wood added 33 assists to total 66 on the day.
Barton made her mark defensively assisting with three of La Salle's four total blocks. Sharrits recorded 16 digs, while Ciancuilli wrapped up her first weekend in an Explorers jersey with 11 digs against the Highlanders.
Explorers Katie Wood and
Devin Corah were named to the All-Tournament team after their efforts over the weekend.
The Explorers will have a quick turnaround to play their first home game at Tom Gola Arena on Tuesday, August 29. They will welcome Lafayette at 7:00 PM for the weekday matchup.
