PHILADELPHIA- A pair of goals lifted the La Salle field hockey team over Saint Louis on Sunday at Hank DeVincent to capture the team's first conference win of the season. The Explorers left the Billikens scoreless for a 2-0 final.
The Explorers and Saint Louis battled it out on a cloudy Sunday for almost 30 minutes of scoreless play, thanks in part to a spectacular defensive save from
Summer Pierson to hold the Billikens off.
When
Eileen Dzwill sent a pass into the circle after a penalty corner, junior
Megan Kida was waiting to send the ball flying into the Billikens'Â goal with a long shot. Kida netted her first goal of the season with just five minutes left to play in the first half to give La Salle a 1-0 advantage.
Kida demonstrated her versatility on the field with a defensive save in the second half on what could have been an equalizer for the Billikens.
Freshman
Amber Blackshear recorded her first collegiate goal for the Blue and Gold on a breakaway midway through the second half.
Lauren Lechleitner took the ball down the field, dribbling past Billiken's goalkeeper Lillian Cossetto to send the ball over to Blackshear. The rookie sent heo ball sailing into the back of the net with a resounding thud for the insurance goal.
The Explorers maintained the lead for the duration of the game to pick up their first Atlantic 10 win. With the win, La Salle improves to 4-2 on the season and 1-1 in A-10 play. The team will travel to Davidson on Friday, Sept. 22 to face the Wildcats at 5:30 p.m.
