CHICAGO, Ill. – The La Salle men's soccer team was defeated, 3-1, at the hands of Loyola (Ill.) on Sunday. The match was part of a two-game Chicago Classic tournament over the weekend.
Redshirt senior
Matt Robinson scored the Explorers' lone goal of the game. His goal came minutes after a Loyola goal in the second half. The forward made it look easy on a penalty kick, his second goal coming on the PK this season.
Loyola's Elliott Collier scored twice in the first half to put the Ramblers up 2-0. His first goal came off a corner that just barely beat the sprawling La Salle goalkeeper
Cameron Keys. His second goal came later in the half on a give and go. The Ramblers scored again in the 29
th minute of the second half after a steal in front of the net left a clear path to a goal.
The Explorers recorded 14 shots including six on goal, but were unable to penetrate an impressive Rambler defense.
Kenny Lassiter led the team with a barrage of six shots (three on goal). La Salle narrowly missed an opportunity to score with six minutes left in the first half when a
Johnny Ciarlante header appeared to be going into the net but the Loyola goalkeeper was able to foot it away at the last second.
Keys made four saves in goal. He made a highlight reel diving stop towards the end of the first half to keep the deficit from increasing.
Zach Rutherford and
Soji Olatoye were named to the all-tournament team.
Head coach
Rob Irvine and the team will travel to play Rider on September 9 at 7:00 PM.
