Field Hockey Earns Senior Day Win Over Davidson, 3-2

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle University field hockey team overcame an early deficit by scoring three unanswered goals, then held on down the stretch to pick up a 3-2 victory over Davidson in an Atlantic 10 matchup on Sunday. Senior Logan Oh accounted for the game-winning goal while junior Amanda Chapin and sophomore Taylor Hafer also scored for the Explorers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Davidson controlled the pace of play early on, and took the early advantage as Leigha Nortier tallied her fifth goal of the year.
  • After a timeout by head coach Kelly Broadway, La Salle regrouped and upped the intensity and pressure.
  • The Explorers eventually broke through in the 30th minute when Chapin, who had inserted a penalty corner just moments earlier, deflected home a ball from Karcher.
  • Hafer quickly gave the home team a lead it would not relinquish a little more than two minutes later.
  • A scrum in front of the net saw La Salle have numerous opportunities before Hafer poked a shot past Davidson goalkeeper Bean Rodriguez.
  • La Salle continued to push forward in the second half, and Karcher nearly had a goal to go along with an assist in the 40th minute, when her shot from distance hit the left post.
  • In the 48th minute, Oh also came close to scoring when her shot was denied by Wildcat defender Julia Smith.
  • Oh would not be denied and put the score at 3-1 when she converted a feed from junior Chloe Lucky just 38 seconds after her initial chance.
  • With time running down, Davidson cut into its deficit when Sydney McKenna converted a breakaway chance with less than four minutes left.
  • The Explorers held on from there to improve to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in Atlantic 10 play.
  • Davidson fell to 5-11 overall and 1-6 in league competition.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Oh's goal tied her for the team lead in the category with classmate Mackenzie Karcher and sophomore Rialee Allen.
  • Chapin is now one shy of her teammates with five goals on the year, and is also tied for second on the team with 17 points.
  • La Salle has scored 41 goals this season, one shy of the 42 scored by the Explorers during the 2013 season.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers will host Rider in their final non-conference contest of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 23. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
