La Salle Advances to A-10 Volleyball Semifinals with 3-1 Win over Duquesne

RICHMOND, Va. - Playing in its first-ever Atlantic 10 Championship, the La Salle University volleyball team defeated the Duquesne Dukes in a thrilling 3-1 decision on Friday to advance to the tournament semifinals. Senior Madison Kuch led the way with a season-high 22 kills for the Explorers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two squads remained within one point of each other early in the opening set, and the Explorers led 9-8 after a kill by Kuch. After Duquesne scored four in a row, sophomore Samantha Graver stepped in to serve, sparking four straight points to put La Salle up by one. However, the Dukes recollected and controlled the remainder of the set, taking it 25-17.
  • Duquesne stormed out to a 9-4 lead to open the second set, forcing a La Salle timeout. The Dukes extended their lead to 13-8, but the Explorers responded with a 9-3 run to take the lead, 17-16, forcing Duquesne to use a timeout of its own.
  • La Salle held its one-point lead at 21-20 and scored four of the final five points in the second frame, capped off by an Elizabeth Osborn kill, tying the match at one apiece with a 25-21 set win.
  • Trailing by one in the third set, the Explorers went on a 5-1 run to go on top by three. The two squads went back-and-forth before La Salle regained its three-point advantage, 18-15, on three straight Kuch kills.
  • The Explorers pushed the third-set lead to five at 23-18, but the Dukes clawed back and had set point after a 5-0 run. After head coach Caitlin Schweihofer called a timeout, kills by Osborn and Kuch helped La Salle snag the set, 27-25.
  • In the final set, the Explorers jumped out to a 13-7 lead after a kill by junior Devin Corah. But Duquesne put together five straight points to go on top. Kuch continued to pace the La Salle offense, though, and pushed the Explorers to a 19-18 lead.
  • With the fourth set tied at 23 all, the Dukes got the next point and held set point. But a kill and an ace by Osborn kept La Salle alive, and sophomore Reilly Lowe blocked the final attempt to seal the win.
