PHILADELPHIA – A career high 20 points from sophomore
Rayshel Brown and a season high in team field goal and three-point percentages wasn't enough for La Salle women's basketball (1-9) to take down St. Johns (7-3) Saturday afternoon as the Explorers fell, 83-57. Brown's 20-point effort is the first time an Explorer cracked the 20-point threshold since
Amy Griffin did it against George Mason to end the regular season last year.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- St. John's raced off to a 11-2 run to open the game before La Salle chipped away at the lead. The Explorers responded with four unanswered points before the Red Storm closed the frame with a 12-point lead.
- La Salle outscored St. John's, 20-19 in the second stanza, with 11 points coming from Brown. The Explorers took an 8-2 run over a 1:04 span early in the stanza to pull within seven. In a close final 6:54 of the period, the Red Storm held a 12-8 margin to give St. John's a 41-30 lead at the half.
- St. John's opened the third quarter scoring the first five points before the Explorers cracked the board. La Salle jumped on a 12-1 run over a 3:45 second span starting around the halfway mark to cut the deficit to seven. Over that span, team was 4-of-7 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from long range. Sophomores Michelle Nicholls and Deja King each dropped five points on the run. St. John's finished the frame on a 7-3 spurt to own a 60-49 lead.
- St. John's pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring La Salle, 23-8.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- La Salle hit a season high 40.4%. (23-of-57) of its shots, including a season best 47.1% (8-of-17) from long range.
- Brown finished the game 8-of-14 from the floor, hitting all three, three-point attempts. In her 33 minutes of play, she added three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
- Joining Brown in double figures were King (12 points) and Nicholls (10 points).
- King added five assists, tying her season high.
- On the glass, junior Shalina Miller paced the team with six boards, while senior Jeryn Reese added five.

La Salle heads to Providence for the Friar Holiday Classic with three games Wednesday through Friday. The Explorers will see Northern Kentucky on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for its first of six straight games away from Tom Gola Arena.
