Softball Drops Doubleheader at UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – The La Salle softball team (7-14, 0-2) fell in both games of a doubleheader at Massachusetts (13-10, 2-0) on Saturday afternoon. The Explorers were designated the home team per league rules after the series was moved from Philadelphia to Amherst because of snow.

La Salle and UMass square off Sunday at noon for the series finale at Sortino Field.

Game 1: Massachusetts 7, La Salle 0
Massachusetts scored three runs in the 2nd against Marlo Roadcap (L, 2-8), and added two more in the 4th and one in the 5th. The Explorers struggled to get the offense going against Meg Colleran (W, 4-4), who tossed five shutout frames to earn the win.

Quinn Breidenbach threw a pair of shutout innings to close the game as the Minutewomen added an insurance run in the 7th.

Game 2: Massachusetts 11, La Salle 3
The Minutewomen took a 3-0 lead before the Explorers got two runs back in the 3rd inning on a Deanna Pineiro RBI groundout and an Emily Conaway sacrifice fly.

UMass pushed the lead to 4-2 in the 4th inning but Emma Schweigert stole home for La Salle in the bottom of the 4th to make it a one-run game again. UMass, however, pushed the game out of reach with seven runs over the final two innings.

Reilly Gearhart (L, 4-4) allowed 11 runs (nine earned) over 6.1 innings, surrendering 13 hits and four walks while striking out three. Kiara Oliver (W, 7-2) allowed three runs over five innings to earn the win, allowing just two hits and a walk while fanning seven.
