Softball Sweeps Rhode Island

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle softball team (9-16, 2-3 A-10) swept a doubleheader with the Rhode Island Rams (6-21, 2-3 A-10) on Saturday afternoon at West Campus Field.

Game 1: La Salle 2, Rhode Island 1
Trailing 1-0 and down to their final three outs, the Explorers hit back-to-back homers in the 7thinning to rally for a 2-1 win in the opener. Ashley Mendenhall led off the inning with a homer to right field to tie the game before Taylor Rohrbaugh drilled the game-winning homer to left to give La Salle the win in walk-off fashion.

Marlo Roadcap (W, 5-4) was brilliant, allowing just three hits while striking out six in the complete-game effort. The Rams got their only run on a solo homer by Paige Julich in the 4thinning.

Becca Rogers (L, 2-9) also threw a complete game for URI, allowing just one hit during six scoreless innings before surrendering the two round-trippers in the 7th

Game 2: La Salle 4, Rhode Island 3
The Rams struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning before the Explorers answered in the home half of the 2nd with Marissa Ewald's two-run homer to left. Ewald's shot sparked a string of four unanswered runs for La Salle as Emma Schweigert belted a solo homer in the 3rd and Rohrbaugh added a two-out RBI single later in the 3rd to make it a three-run lead.

Sophomore Reilly Gearhart (W, 5-4) held onto the lead, pitching around a leadoff single in the 7th after Rhody scored twice in the 6th to cut La Salle's lead to 4-3. The righty allowed two earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four.

Schweigert, Jackie Heim and Emily Conaway each had two hits as the Explorers tallied 10 hits in game two.

La Salle is back in action this week as they host Lafayette for the Spring Tailgate Series on Wednesday at West Campus Field. The Explorers then visit Dayton next weekend for a three-game series with the Flyers.
